Lions Helping Puketapu Tamariki See Clearly

By October 27, 2026No Comments

A huge THANK YOU to the Lions volunteers from the Pakeke, New Plymouth Central and Bell Block Puketapu Lions Clubs, who visited our school last week for two incredible days of vision screening.

Across 17 classes, the team tested over 300 sets of eyes — an amazing effort that will make a real difference to our school community.

Each child completed four different checks:

🔹 General vision – checking how well they can see

🔹 3D perception – assessing depth perception

🔹 Colour perception – checking how they see colours

🔹 Eye health – using their amazing specialist Plusoptix machine to help check the health of their eyes

This vision-screening initiative is a first, happening right here in Taranaki, making our region a leader in supporting children’s eye health. We’re proud to be part of a community that embraces innovative opportunities to support our tamariki and help them thrive. Taranaki leading the motu!

The two days ran incredibly smoothly and were well worth the effort, with several children receiving referrals for their whānau to take to their optician for further assessment.

We were also very proud of our tamariki! All our students demonstrated our school values, and the Lions team commented on how friendly and polite everyone was. What a wonderful reflection of our school community.

An extra-special thank you goes to the Lions team, as every person involved is a volunteer, generously donating their own time to support the wellbeing of our children. Their commitment and kindness are greatly appreciated.
