At Puketapu School, we are incredibly proud of our sports leader, Hamuora Adams, a young man who shows us that being a great athlete is about so much more than what happens on the scoreboard.
Hamuora has an amazing attitude towards sport. He is always looking out for others, making sure everyone gets an opportunity to participate, and ensuring things are fair. Whether he is playing, supporting his teammates or helping our School Sports Coordinator, Hamuora leads with kindness, fairness, respect and mana.
His sportsmanship has not gone unnoticed. Parents, players and teachers from other schools and teams regularly comment on how impressed they are with Hamuora, not just with his sporting ability, but with the way he conducts himself. His attitude and the way he represents Puketapu are something we can all aspire to.
A busy Friday!
Last Friday, Hamu captained our Year 7 & 8 rugby team at the Interschool Sports Tournament. With a few of our netballers feeling under the weather, we asked Hamu if he could help fill in for netball too.
He played a full netball game, followed by three rugby games, before heading back onto the netball court for our final game of the day!
And somehow, he did it all with the same positive attitude and enthusiasm.
If we could clone Hamu and have one of him in every school team, we absolutely would!
Representing Taranaki
After a huge day at Interschool, there was no rest for Hamu. He headed home to pack for an even bigger weekend, representing Taranaki in two different sports at two tournaments in Palmerston North.
On Saturday and Sunday, Hamu played basketball for Taranaki Under 14 Black, finishing the tournament with a win over Hawke’s Bay.
He also represented Taranaki in Rugby League, playing against Te Tai Tokerau, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay, with another win against Hawke’s Bay.
Hamu arrived back in New Plymouth on Sunday night, just in time for Volleyball, where he plays in the Puketapu School team.
And, because apparently one team wasn’t enough, he also stepped in to help two teams who were short on players!
A true all-round sportsman
Hamu’s commitment to sport extends well beyond school.
He plays a huge role in our Puketapu A Netball team on Saturdays, often heading straight from netball to play rugby for NPOB.
He also plays Under 14 Rugby League for Bell Block Marist Dragons, represents Puketapu in our Year 7 & 8 Basketball team, and plays representative basketball for Basketball Taranaki.
Earlier in the year Hamu also represented our school at Interschool Swimming Sports and received a placing ribbon.
Alongside all of this, Hamu is also a Puketapu School Sports Leader, helping our Sports Coordinator and supporting the organisation and running of school sport.
But what makes Hamu stand out isn’t simply the number of sports he plays or the amount of time he spends on the court or field.
It is how he makes other people feel while he is there.
He includes others. He encourages his teammates. He makes sure everyone gets a go. He celebrates other people’s successes. He shows respect to opponents and officials. And he carries himself with a level of mana that makes us incredibly proud.
Hamu, thank you for everything you bring to Puketapu sport. You are an outstanding role model for our tamariki and a fantastic example of what it means to lead by example.
