Learning to Be First Responders
On Friday afternoon, room 7 were lucky enough to take part in a special St John First Aid session with our instructor, Justin.
Justin began by teaching us about the important work St John does in our community and what we need to know if we ever have to call 111 in an emergency. We learnt that it is really important to know where we are, our address, the phone number we are calling from, and to clearly explain why we need help. We also talked about situations where an ambulance might be needed and when calling 111 may not be necessary.
One activity that really caught everyone’s attention was learning just how difficult it can sometimes be to tell the difference between medicine and lollies. We learnt that we should never put something in our mouths if we don’t know exactly what it is or where it has come from. Medicine should only ever be taken when it is given to us by a trusted adult.
We then got to put our learning into practice with some hands-on first aid. Tamariki worked with a partner to practise putting a bandage on an arm, before swapping roles so everyone had a turn at being both the first aider and the patient.
To finish the session, Justin gave each of us an awesome St John fridge magnet to take home. These will help us remember the important information we may need to provide if we ever have to call for an ambulance.
Justin Visits Puketapu!
And it wasn’t just Room 7 who got to learn from Justin! Every class across Puketapu School attended one of Justin’s First Responder sessions, giving all of our tamariki the opportunity to learn these important skills.
Justin was engaging, entertaining and made sure the learning was fun and memorable. It is safe to say that he is now famous around our school! Our tamariki have come away with some really valuable lessons and knowledge that could one day make a real difference in an emergency.
