Welcome to Puketapu School!

Puketapu School is in the suburb of Bell Block, New Plymouth. We are a lovely, local school with bright and colourful classrooms and a dedicated and passionate teaching and support staff.

Puketapu School teaches children from New Entrants (5 year-olds) right up to Year 8s (12-13 year-olds) and has almost 400 pupils. We were named by our local hapu, Puketapu, which translates into ‘Sacred Hill’, and is part of the Te Atiawa Iwi.

From our school grounds we are privileged enough to have a great view of our majestic maunga, Mount Taranaki, and we are located so close to the sea that we can hear the waves crashing against the rocks. Many of our visitors comment on how lucky we are to have such beautiful views and bountiful resources so close to us. We often use the beach, especially in the summer months, to study the rock pools, the sand dunes and the relevant ecological systems. We also incorporate the beach into our community walks, allowing us to celebrate and appreciate what is special about the place we live.

Most of our pupils live in Bell Block and either walk, bike or scoot to school. Our school has four Learning Teams that are named after our native trees: Rimu (New Entrants, Y1, & Y2), Totara (Y3 & Y4), Kowhai (Y5 & Y6), and Kauri (Y7 & Y8). We also have four Whanau Groups, Kakapo, Kiwi, Piwakawaka and Tui, consisting of children from throughout the school. The mix and integration of the ages allows for strong and trusting relationships to be created, as the older children can assist and support the younger children throughout their educational journey, adding to the family feeling encouraged at Puketapu.

Our school vision is Empower all People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners and this philosophy is at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that it takes a community to raise a child and we are privileged to be so well supported by a pro-active Board of Trustees (BoT), an enthusiastic Home & School, and a fantastic and friendly community.

We welcome you to become a part of our school.
