Matariki Mā Puanga 2025 – A Celebration of Whakapapa, Whanaungatanga and Wairua
Today our kura came together to celebrate Matariki Mā Puanga – a very special time in Aotearoa where we reflect, remember, and reset for the new year ahead. Although we can’t see Matariki from our part of the motu, we honour Puanga, the star that signals the Māori New Year for many west coast iwi.
We began our day bright and early at 6:30am. The fire pits were lit and glowing, keeping us toasty while we gathered together in the dark. Our morning started with kai tuku atu ki a Puanga (a hautapu ceremony) and karakia kai to acknowledge the past and show our gratitude for what lies ahead.
As the sun began to rise, the warmth of shared parakuihi (breakfast) filled the air. Whaea Moana led us in waiata with her guitar, creating a beautiful atmosphere. Then it was time for our kapa haka whakataetae and whakangahau groups to perform, with Matua Phill supporting on the guitar.
Behind the scenes, our incredible kitchen team – alongside volunteers including some of our ex-students – were busy preparing a hearty breakfast. Tamariki and whānau were treated to a delicious feed of spaghetti, sausages, hash browns, toast, porridge, and warm drinks – tino reka!
At 8am, our whānau said their farewells and the tamariki split into their whānau groups – Kiwi, Kākāpō, Pīwakawaka and Tūī – to begin their rotations of fun and meaningful activities. Throughout the day, our tamariki engaged in a wide range of kaupapa including:
- Weaving
- Tapu Ae (a traditional Māori game)
- Art
- Māra kai (gardening)
- Ti Rākau (stick games)
- Whai (string games)
- Poi
- Pakiaka Maui/Matau (team building and leadership games)
It was a day full of laughter, learning, culture and connection, a beautiful way to acknowledge the Māori New Year. Ngā mihi nui to all our staff, whānau and volunteers who helped make this celebration so special.
