A Day in the Life of Pablo – Our School Cat
If you’ve ever visited our school, chances are you’ve already met Pablo the cat.
Pablo starts his day bright and early — often before 7am, when he spots Mr Quince driving up the driveway to unlock the school. That’s Pablo’s signal to stretch, shake off the sleep, and make his way across the road to begin his very important daily routine.
His first mission? Get into the staffroom before anyone else. As soon as he spots a staff member arriving, Pablo makes a beeline for the door, hoping for a warm cuddle and a sunny spot on a staffroom chair. After welcoming the team and doing his morning rounds, it’s off to the tech block for Breakfast Club.
There, he greets tamariki and the wonderful parents volunteering for breakfast. He weaves between legs and accepts a pat or two before heading off to scout out the warmest classroom to spend the rest of the morning snoozing in.
After morning tea, Pablo quietly slips away and heads back across the road for a proper cat nap because after all, being this adored is exhausting work.
But don’t worry, Pablo’s not gone for long. He wakes in time for the 3pm bell and strolls back over to school to see the tamariki off and say goodbye for the day. Even after the school day ends, Pablo keeps a close eye on things from his favourite watching spots.
On days when he hasn’t had enough human interaction, Pablo sometimes wanders down Dillon Drive to visit a few of his favourite local houses, just to say kia ora.
Then it’s time to settle in for the night, keeping watch over the school grounds until it all begins again the next day.
Even though technically he belongs to an ex school whānau across the road, Pablo is a much loved part of our kura — a true four-legged legend.
