Year 4 & 5 Enjoy Cycle Skills with “Let’s Go NPDC” 🚴♂️
Last week, our Year 4 & 5 students had an exciting day learning cycle skills thanks to the team from Let’s Go NPDC. Each class spent a full day discovering how to ride safely, check their bikes, and navigate the roads with confidence.
Students had the chance to bring their own bikes, or use the ones provided by Cycle Skills. Before heading out, they learned how to check their bikes carefully — wheels pumped, brakes working, handles safe, and the seat at the right height. Inside the classroom, they also learned the ABCD-Q system: Air, Brakes, Controls, Chains, and Q for Quick Release.
After putting on their helmets (checked for a snug and proper fit), students practiced their riding skills on the courts. They learned:
-
Riding with one hand
-
Hand signals
-
Emergency braking
-
Watching out for cars
…and played some fun competitive games, which had a few of the boys racing to win!
Two of our students, Soliga Korewha-Tuavao and Ethnie Stevens from Room 9, shared their experience:
“We had to bring our bike if we had one. If you didn’t, we got to use the Cycle Skills bikes. We had to check the bikes — wheels pumped, brakes, scratches, handles, and seat height. Then we went into the classroom and learned about ABCD-Q. After that, we put our helmets on and checked they were on properly. Then we went out to the courts and practiced riding. It was Soliga’s first time riding a bike! We learned riding with one hand, signals, emergency braking, and looking for cars. We also played some games — the boys got really competitive and wanted to win! It was really fun, and now we are confident to ride a bike. Thanks Cycle Skills Taranaki!”
It was a fantastic week of learning and fun, and our students are now safer and more confident riders!
